Last weekend Master & Mrs Boyle family and 16 members of Inverclyde Cho’s Tae Kwon Do Scotland was invited to travel to Lough Allen Hotel, Drumshanbo, Co, Leitrim Ireland to take part in Aimaa Ireland 3rd International Training Camp 2019. AIMAA Ireland hosted the third European Summer Camp under AIMAA European Director Master John Darcy. The event was another roaring success for the AIMAA and is gaining momentum annually. This year campers had seminars covering a host of different aspects of training. Diversity in your training/thinking which is the core of what the AIMAA has stood for and continues to strive for since its formation in 1980 by Grandmaster Hee Il Cho
After an opening speech from Master Darcy, Master Byrne and Master Boyle the camp was officially on. Mr Gerry Long was first on with what was the best place for his basics class covering the Hyung and One-Step Sparring. Our foundations…. and our camp was built from that firm starting point. Mrs Cecilia Gough Miss Kara Gough and Miss Kirsty Gough took the panthers for their now famous music workout which is always a big hit.
Next was a very technical boxing class from Mr John Darcy. The class covered footwork for setups, distance management and combination drills. I know from experience that Mr Darcy has a wealth of knowledge in boxing.
Ms Katrina Kenny was on next with very effective kicking seminar. Mrs Kenny covered drills for point, continuous and full contact fighting and offered explanations on which would work in the different systems.
Day one came to an end and campers could then explore the many attractions that Drumshanbo has to offer including water sports, horse riding, canal cruises, hiking, biking or if camp had taken its toll then the town offered an array of cafes and coffee shops.
Day two started with self defence from Mr Aeneas O’Connor showing the effectiveness of short powerful movements to vital areas of the attacker while making distance and scanning the area for escape.
Mr Paul Healy was next and showed some Jiu Jitsu movements. He tried to take things down a notch and show the flowing aspect of the art.
Next up was the boss, Master John Darcy and as always he put on a show second to none. Covering the basics, the camp had done a full circle from its starting point with Mr Long. Showing perhaps that we start with the basics, we go through different phases and systems but always return to what works… the basics. Master Darcy was on fire as he commanded us through various footwork drills and strikes directly from Grandmasters arsenal delivered with speed and accuracy. His class finished with grueling three minute partner drills and with the Master pushing us he ensured each student was fully spent before bringing the seminar and the 2019 AIMAA European Summer camp to a close..
